The artist Anthony Irvine has become somewhat of an icon in the last couple of decades partly because he provides us with entertaining abstract art that accompanies his conceptual performances but mainly because both his work and perspective are bewildering and mesmerising in equal degrees. His work is intellectually compelling, and in an odd kind of way, rather philosophical – making us question the nature of art and performance and their relationship with society, the individual, and the subject. Are we merely consumers of art or are we stakeholders in our commercialised society? Is art merely currency for capitalists, people who invest for profits or is it for art enthusiasts who believe in the intrinsic value of art/artists to change the way we think of the world and our place within it.
I will be interviewing Irvine on 7th July at Guggleton Farm, Stalbridge, nr. Sherborne, Dorset. For tickets please contact the organisers at Guggleton Farm Arts. [Dr Roshan Doug]
